Movement
The end goal is to integrate all the treatment modalities into movement and to reinforce your resilience. Some of the movement will be mindful and specific at first however ultimately just moving more and moving better is an elixir for great health. Where does treating stop and training start? In my book they are one in the same. When I work with some of my more elderly patients I am amazed by those who have always led active lifestyles as they have discovered exuberant health at every opportunity and inspire with their mobility, ease of movement and optimistic outlook.
Treatments
Treatment is all about adopting the right tools for the right job (for more see here the link to osteopathy therapies section). I will use a lot of different modalities to address different parts of your body during our session. Here are just some of the areas we will work on: Your nervous system and how it feeds information from the outside world to your brain and body (a major piece of the puzzle for many people). Your joints and their mobility, stability, and strength How your body integrates all these parts together to create effortless movement Your beliefs, fears and hopes and how they affect your movement and outlook going forward (often overlooked but vitally important).
Assessments
This is where the fun really begins as we start to layer movement assessments over traditional osteopathic palpation and manual muscle testing. I will video you walking, break down the biomechanics of the movements that are causing your discomfort and really reacquaint you with your body and how it has adapted over time. The goal is to figure out why your body is asking for help and where it would like us to begin. Once the maps are aligned and the compass is pointing north its time to continue the journey…
Consultation
Telling your story is the first and most important step on our journey together. Like any journey, we need to know ‘where’ we are going and ‘how’ we are going to get there and to do this we need an accurate map. Your map begins with a case history form that you will be sent before our session. By exploring your current symptoms, previous injuries, lifestyle, beliefs and fears (you will find it fascinating going back in time) we can figure out where you are now and how to get you moving forward again.
NKT
Neurokinetic therapy (NKT) was developed by David Weinstock in San Fransisco. This brilliant concept of modified muscle testing enables muscle patterns to be assessed and compensations to be understood. Traditional therapy often favours releasing tight joints and massaging sore muscles, however this approach fails to understand why they are working so hard in the first place and often results in chasing pain instead of its cause. If a joint manipulation helps for a couple of days, but then stiffness starts to return, then the joint is restricted for a reason. NKT provides a sophisticated assessment and treatment modality that helps to understand the root cause of these poor movement patterns and instantaneous feedback that guides your journey to pain free movement.
FRC
Andreo Spina created Functional Range Conditioning (FRC) as a way to train joints and everything that supports them. If only someone had created an evidence-based system to become stronger and more mobile when I was a dancer! FRC gives you the prerequisites to move well in whatever sport or activity you should choose. The system begins by making sure that each and every joint can move well, while simultaneously strengthening and controlling this new found movement with appropriately challenging exercises. Ultimately this isolation is integrated into movement patterns to train the nervous system and to challenge you to control your new range. Apart from the numerous acronyms used to describe the movements, FRC is incredibly simple in its intention, but oh so powerful. Here is a link to the CARs routine Andrea developed as a daily practice. I use it myself and with my personal training clients daily.
P-DTR
Proprioceptive Deep Tendon Reflex therapy (or P-DTR) for short is all about working with your brain and your nervous system. Your nervous system only does three things. It takes in input from the world around you, for example “the ground you are stepping on is slippery,” interprets it “this appears to be dangerous,” and creates an output to your muscles glands and organs in response “step to your right and take another path”. Simply put to improve movement, we need to improve your nervous system and the quality of information that is being received by it. Using manual muscle testing P-DTR allows us to assess how effectively we are receiving this input, to treat it and to then reassess. It is an incredibly powerful tool.
Integrated Systems Model
Diane Lee’s Integrated Systems Model is the closet that I keep and organises all my treatment modalities in. Diane is a physiotherapist who is not only versed in all the current research but who also has a ridiculous level of clinical expertise to boot. She would describe her system as “just good old physiotherapy” but I think she is underselling her model which is all about getting to the root cause of your complaint, treating it and reintegrating back into movement – just the kind of therapy I love. She is also renowned for her work with post-pregnancy issues such as back pain, pelvic pain, prolapse and incontinence and is creating groundbreaking work in these areas. There was a lot of journeying back and forth to Vancouver to be mentored by her but the benefit to both myself and my patients has made it worth every mile.
Anatomy in Motion
Anatomy in Motion is the ever evolving brain child of Gary Ward. Its aim is to unlock the incredible potential that lies within every human body. By observing the body move during walking it is possible to identify joints, muscles and postures that are being compromised with every step we take. Alongside a thorough case history it is then possible to paint a picture as to why there is discomfort in your system. It is the why that provides peace of mind and the first step towards healing. The solution is to offer back movement to your body, and if your body finds value in this it accepts it (often immediately). It is as if the body has forgotten how to use certain patterns and it just needs a gentle reminder that movement would be so much easier this way.
Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of medical conditions. It works with the structure and function of the body and is based on the principle that the well-being of an individual depends on the skeleton, muscles, ligaments, connective tissues and mind functioning smoothly together. We believe that for your body to work well, its structure must also work well. Osteopaths work to restore your body to a state of balance, where possible without the use of drugs or surgery. We use touch, physical manipulation, stretching and massage to increase the mobility of joints, to relieve muscle tension, to enhance the blood and nerve supply to tissues, and to help your body’s own healing mechanisms. It took me 5 years to become an Osteopath and primary health care practitioner and I continue to undertake yearly continuing education as stipulated by our governing body the General Osteopathic Council.
